Breed Showcase ~ Great Dane

This idea has been mulling around in my head for quite some time (along with many others!). I am excited to finally bring it to life!

Every breed of dog is so unique in their characteristics, motivation and personality. What I love most about getting together with clients is hearing not only what they love about their dog, but also learning about why they chose a certain breed of dog and how it fits into their lifestyle. While every dog within a breed may be different there are very often characteristics that are similar. My hope is that this may become a resource for others considering looking at different breeds (based on personal experiences of course!). This will be an ongoing series that I hope will evolve over time. I look forward to learning and hearing your stories!

If you are reading this and own a unique breed of dog that you would like to be featured, please contact me at teann@muttlovephotography.com. An application will be sent to you as well as specific information on the feature. Complimentary mini session by Mutt Love included to obtain images used in the feature.

Tell me a little bit about this breed of dog. (Interesting facts, characteristics or anything else that you know). Why did you choose the particular breed of dog?

We looked around for many years at different breeds of dogs like German short hair pointer to the Shetland sheep dog. The one that fit our life and personality we felt was the great dane. We really like the blue (color) of dane with its shiny gray color and the way the color brought out the eyes, head and body of the dog. This breed is very large like my self as I am 6′ 5” and wanted a dog that would resemble my self in stature. The great dane can be a very lazy dog and does not need much space to live, as long as it gets out for its daily walks it usually just takes over the couch and bed the rest of the day. The great dane is also known as a lap dog, even though it can grow to 150-200 lbs, so its going to be interesting once daisy is full grown how much lap she will need to sit on. This breed is an iconic dog to me as you do not see many around.

What are some of your favorite characteristics of Daisy?

Daisy’s color is immaculate and strong looking. She really likes to cuddle with myself and lesley any time she can. Daisy is very playful and smart and picks up on training very fast with a little help from some treats involved. When she cuddles in the chair with one of us she will bury her head under your arm or under a blank covering herself fully up and staying like this for hours. If she has the chance she will sleep under the covers at the end of the bed.

What is Daisy’s personality like?

Daisy is shy until she trusts the situation or individuals she is around at the time, but once she gets to know you she will jump up and down zoom around ( they call these zoomies) the room and even have a friendly bark for you. She loves to climb to the top of the stairs and wait for you to come find her, she sits there with her backside and back legs on the upper stair and her front legs on the next stair down like she is sitting on a chair like a human. I have been told she will sit like this on a chair or couch when she is bigger. She usually shouts out a quick sharp bark when you move to wards her, and then she retreats to her kennel for a treat. This usually happens at bed time.

Having had Daisy as a part of your family, what information would you share with someone else looking for this particular breed?

For anyone looking at a great dane I would say do your research on the breeder and what kind of personality traits Great Danes may have. They are a big breed so they will grow fast and will not live as long as a smaller breed. I believe the ave age for GD is around 7 years old. We are learning like any dog but especially this size of dog start to train right away as a puppy as this little dog is easy to control now but Lesley my wife is 4’2” and she is worried about a 100 + pound dog taking over the house and pulling her along during walks. Hey look its a rabbit !!!!!!!!!
