Back in July, a couple girlfriends and I headed out on a back country adventure. If I could be away exploring every weekend I would, or better yet to live in the mountains would be a dream!
We’ve done a few back country hikes and each had their own epic moments just as every hike does. This time was even more awesome because we were able to bring our dogs on the adventure!
Our mountain getaway was Diana Lake Lodge just outside of the NW boundary of Kootenay National Park. This was more of a “luxury” (ie. one step up from tent camping) trip as we stayed right at the lodge. All we had to hike in was our clothing and food! That was amazing, especially being able to bring in REAL food! Yay! No dehydrated stuff!
A little info about hiking with dogs and a few lessons learned on this trip:
-Any time in the back country it is advised that dogs be on-leash. This is for their safety and your safety due to wildlife and is reinforced in park areas. As we were more off the beaten path for this hike, there weren’t the same regulations. There had not been any evidence of bear activity in the area nor did we see any and the dogs were much happier exploring freely so we did take the chance and let them off-leash.
-I picked up some Primal freeze dried dog food from Fox and Tux Pet Boutique in Edmonton before we left and Juno LOVED it! Totally worth it!
-One of our pups had a dog pack but it likely wasn’t necessary as the hike is not too long to get in and easy to carry in a pack.
-For pups that are prone to sore paws, dog boots are a must.
-And of course a water bowl for dogs, although there are plenty of fresh streams to drink from on the hike up and near the lodge.
Special notes about this hike:
-This spring the valley experienced a large area of avalanche activity. On the way up we had to navigate some extensive avalanche debris (climbing over and under large fallen trees). This should be cleared some time this summer but be sure to check for updates on trail status. This did slow down our hike as it took a little longer to get through.
-The hike up to Diana Lake can be done as a day hike but the lodge is so nice and relaxing, it is worth booking a stay ahead of time!
-Hiking distance to Diana Lake is 5.7km to the lake and 9.5km to the Judge
-Difficulty rating: Moderate to lake, difficult to the Judge
-Total Elevation: gain 630 metres to he lake, 1050 metres to the Judge
About the lodge:
Diana Lake Lodge is located in the most serene and peaceful setting. It was wonderful to be able to stay in a cabin instead of a tent. The lodge is set up with a common room with a kitchen and dining area as well as sleeping platforms complete with bedding for up to 8 people. They offer a full catered stay where they cook your meals for you or you can book as self serve and pack in your own food. We took the self serve option and it was well worth it! The caretakers Dustin and Drea were wonderful hosts. And a super awesome bonus…they have a heated outdoor shower! They have several plans for expansion in the next few years to have separate rooms and space for guests. I am excited to go back and explore this beautiful oasis again.
See the Diana Lake Lodge website for full information on booking your stay.
