52 Weeks Project – Week 3

“Curiosity is the most powerful thing you own.”

This week’s project theme challenges us to “Ask Better Questions.” Not the standard, “what lens did you use?” or “what are your settings?” but asking questions about our work and what we are trying to express with our photographs.

What role does color play? What would this scene look like with different lenses? If I shift my position how with that affect the relationship of the elements in the scene? What is the light doing?

During a session, these questions are going through my mind in those split seconds before I take a photograph. It not only takes vision but a lot of brain work, too! In reviewing my images from last week (See Blog post Week 2) the images were either taken with a 50mm lens or a 70-200mm lens because I love the softness of the blur in the background. They create that beautiful separation between the subject and the background and that artistic painted look that I look for when choosing backdrops. Which is very much the style of my work.

I often shy away from using my wider angle lens, my 35mm. So this week I decided to be a little adventurous with my photographs. My goal with the following images is to convey playful images showing the effect of different angles. I asked myself, “What does play look like from down low, up high, and at eye level?” Juno and I sure had a ton of fun and we had a fresh dusting of snow, too! I look forward to creating these types of images in my sessions!

“There is no right answer, only possibilities, some of which will work better than others. Forget practice; learn to play.”

While she may look serious in the following image, this is her “give me the toy” face when she wants to play!

Playfulness does not just mean action photographs. It can be the look in the eye or the way the snow flakes fall on her muzzle.

What do you see in these images? Do you see playfulness?
